Palm Fatty Acid Distillate

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) is a co-product of physical refining of crude palm oil products and consists of free fatty acids (81.7%), glycerides (14.4%), squalene (0.8%), vitamin E (0.5%), sterols (0.4%) and other components (2.2%). PFAD is a light brown semi-solid at ambient temperature which transforms into a brown liquid when heated.

The origins of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate

The Origins of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) is a by-product generated from crude palm oil refinery plants. PFAD is obtained as a distillate from the FFA stripping tower process. The primary product of crude palm oil processing is refined, bleached, and deodorized palm oil. This is further fractionated into RBD olein and stearin through controlled cooling and filter pressing processes.

The major constituents of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) are free fatty acids, mainly oleic, stearic, and palmitic acids. As PFAD primarily contains fatty acids along with certain impurities, its quality is relatively unstable and requires short-term storage. Therefore, freshly produced PFAD is generally preferred, as aged material may adversely impact the quality of biodiesel produced.
